Todays Hot rig is a new LBZ duramax 6.6 with the infamous Allison 6 speed automatic transmission.

Despite the snickers and thumbs down some enthusiasts give the 350 Olds diesel and 6.2 diesel, both were put in late 70s and early 80s GM vehicles - cars and light duty pickups laid the foundation for the current trucks.

My family owned both an Olds 98 and Olds Cutlass with 350 Diesels. (and I have stories)

Late in March 1984 I special ordered a GMC SIERRA CLASSIC K 10 4x4 Shortbed pickup with the 6.2 DIESEL and Turbo 700 R4 automatic transmission.

With the unexpected production delays , the truck finnally got build in early September 1984 as a 1985 model.

Here it is June 2006. I still own that 85 GMC , and despite several offers to buy it since it was retired 10 years ago, I have hung onto it , hoping some day to get the time to restore that faithfull truck. The truck has close to 250,000 miles on it , with the only work done to the engine being injector pumps, alternators, belts and glow plug controlers (other than normal maintenance items.)

Restoration of the truck has been in the back of my head for a long time. I don't know how to weld, but will soon be forced to buy the equipment and learn how. Mechanically the truck has few issues, but sitting unused for many years has taken its toll with major RUST !

So I've both been buying parts from my local GM dealers and watching E bay.

The shortbed box seem the easiest thing to start with , and after a couple years watching I located a rust free and mostly dent free dual tank shortbed in Richmond Virgina. Bid on it and won it in February . The seller was understanding and patiently awaited my pickup.

Finnally in Mid May I was able to borrow my buddie Paul's trailer and headed down to Richmond in the 2002 Duramax (20.5 mpg !)

An online friend suggested I document the restoration of this truck in the rigs section and in the following months I'll post pictures of the progress (or lack of) restoration of this truck.

Your comments , hints and advice will be appeciated !
